It does not matter whether you marry an Iranian in Japan or in Iran.

However, if the Iranian side does it first, it will usually take between 4 months and 1 year for the application to be processed, so it is more common for the Japanese side to go through the marriage procedures first, as this will simplify the process.

The following is a guide to the procedure for marriage with an Iranian.

Obtain a “Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage” from the Iranian Embassy in Japan.

  • A copy of the Japanese family register
  • Certificate of origin issued by the Iranian government (Shenasnameh)
  • Father’s consent for marriage (if the Iranian is a woman)

  • Certificate of legal capacity to marry (with Japanese translation)
  • Passport (photo page. (with Japanese translation)

A copy of your family register (koseki touhon) at your local municipal office in Japan.

A certificate of acceptance of the marriage notification will be issued when the notification is accepted.
The marriage is considered valid when it is accepted.
A copy of the family register reflecting the fact of marriage can be obtained within one week of the date of acceptance of the marriage registration.

To get married to a Muslim, you need to go through a religious marriage procedure.

In order to marry a Muslim, the Japanese must also convert to Islam.
If you are going to marry an Iranian who is a Muslim, we recommend you to go to the Ahlul Bayt Centre for your initiation and religious marriage as the Iranian Embassy in Japan will also guide you. A fee of 30,000 yen is required.

In this procedure, you will get a marriage certificate and a certificate of initiation for religious marriage.

  • 3 photographs (3 x 4 cm) (for women, with hair covered by a scarf, etc.)
  • Passport
  • Proof of address of the Japanese person (certificate of residence, driver’s license, etc.)

  • Personal seal (inkan)

Documents to be prepared by Iranian nationals

  • One photograph (3 x 4 cm)
  • Passport
  • Shenasnameh

Test at a Japanese hospital.

Take a test for HIV, syphilis, thalassemia anemia, narcotics (one kind of methamphetamine or opium, etc.) at a designated hospital guided by the Iranian Embassy in Japan and obtain a certificate of the result.

Register the marriage on the Iranian side at the Iranian Embassy in Japan.

Documents required for registration

  • Application form for marriage registration (available at the Iranian Embassy)
  • Certificate of Acceptance of Marriage Registration (issued by the local government)
  • Religious Marriage Certificate
  • Certificate of Acceptance
  • A copy of the family register (showing the names of the couple)
  • Photo of Japanese national (taken within the last 3 months, passport size. 6 photos of Japanese (taken within the last 3 months, passport size, or with a scarf if female)
  • Three passport size photographs of Iranian nationals, taken within the last three months.
  • Medical certificate and test results issued by a hospital for HIV, syphilis, thalassemia, narcotics (methamphetamine, opium, etc.) (within 3 months).
  • Passport of a Japanese national
  • Iranian passport and Shenasnameh.
