If you wish to apply for marriage in Japan first

1. Obtaining a copy of your family register in Taiwan

If you are a Taiwanese national, you need to obtain three copies of your family register in Taiwan. If you are in Japan and have an acquaintance in Taiwan, you can go to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office to obtain the application form and a letter of attorney for your acquaintance.

2. Obtaining a Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage

You can apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office.

Required documents for Taiwanese nationals

  • A copy of your family register (Japanese translation required)
  • Passport

3. Marriage registration in Japan

To register your marriage in Japan, please visit your local municipal office in Japan.

Required documents

  • A copy of the Taiwanese family register (Japanese translation required) and the Taiwanese passport
  • Japanese seal (inkan)

After your notification has been accepted, you will be able to obtain a copy of your family register showing your spouse. Please obtain three copies of this document. (One of them will be used to apply for a residence visa)

4. Register your marriage in Taiwan

You can register your marriage either in Japan or in Taiwan.

If in Japan

You and your spouse should go to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office to register your marriage in Taiwan.

Required documents

  • Two copies of your family register with your spouse’s name on it and both of your passports
  • A personal seal with the full name of the Taiwanese national.
  • A copy of the family register of the Taiwanese national when he or she was unmarried (the copy obtained in 1)
  • The marriage certificate will be issued in about 2 days after the application.
If done in Taiwan

Two copies of your family register with your spouse’s details will be authenticated at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office. The two certified copies of the marriage certificate must be submitted to the city hall of your place of residence in Taiwan.

If you wish to apply for marriage in Taiwan first

1. Obtaining a copy of your family register

Japanese nationals should obtain a copy of their family register at the municipal office of their place of residence or domicile. After obtaining a copy of your family register, you will need to travel from Japan to Taiwan.

2. Obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage

You can obtain a “Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage” at the International Exchange Association Taipei Office or Kaohsiung Office in Taiwan.

Required documents

  • A copy of the Japanese family register
  • Japanese passport (original and copy)

3.Certification of the Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage

The Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage will be authenticated at the Consular Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan. This process takes approximately two days.

4.Submitting the Marriage Certificate to Taiwan

You and your spouse will go to the city hall of Taiwan and submit the “Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage” and the “Marriage Certificate”. Once the notification is accepted, you will be able to obtain a “copy of the family register with your spouse’s information” and a “marriage certificate”.

5. Register your marriage in Japan

You can register your marriage at the municipal office in Japan.

  • Marriage certificate (Japanese translation required) and a copy of the family register of your spouse (Japanese translation required)
  • Taiwanese passport (not required if not already issued)
  • Japanese seal (inkan)
