Marriage procedures with Malaysian people can be done in either of the following ways, but Malaysian people who do not have an address in Japan usually have to go through the marriage procedure first from the Malaysian side.

How to get married from the Japanese side

① Malaysian people obtain a “Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage” at the Malaysian Embassy in Japan

The following documents are required to obtain it. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you need the approval of the Malaysian government, and if you are 18 to 20 years old, you need the approval of your father. If you have been married, you will also need a death certificate if your spouse has divorced and a divorce certificate if your spouse has divorced.

(Required documents for Malaysians who are Muslims)

  • Passport (Japanese people can use a driver’s license or health insurance card)
  • Japanese family register (excerpt) book
  • Japanese Resident’s card
  • Japanese person’s Islamic acceptance certificate
    * Japanese people need to enroll in Islam in advance.
  • Marriage permit for father or Imam (Islamic guru)
    * Required if Japanese or Malaysian is a woman.
  • IC (identification card) for Malaysian people
  • Birth certificate for Malaysian people
  • Marriage permit from a religious institution in Malaysia

(Required documents for Malaysian non-Muslims)

  • Passport (Japanese driver’s license or health insurance card is acceptable)
  • Japanese marriage requirement certificate and its translation
  • Malaysia IC (identification card)
  • for people and singleness certificate for Malaysians

* A certificate of singleness can be obtained by taking an oath at the Malaysian embassy in Japan and submitting an affidavit to the marriage registration office in Malaysia through your family.

② Submit the marriage registration to the municipal office in Japan

The following documents are required when submitting a marriage registration.

  • Certificate of fulfillment of marriage requirements for Malaysian people
  • Passport for Malaysian people

* A copy of the family register is also required when reporting outside the registered domicile of Japanese people.

③ Report the notification to the Malaysian Embassy in Japan within 6 months after the marriage notification.

In addition to the notification, the following documents are required.

  • Certificate of acceptance of marriage registration or certificate of matters to be stated in marriage registration
    * If the Malaysian is not a Muslim, the following documents are also required.
  • Passport (Japanese and Malaysian)
  • Residence card (if Malaysian is resident)
  • Family register after marriage (excerpt)
  • Resident’s card after marriage
  • Malaysian IC (Identification Card)
  • Birth Certificate for Malaysians

How to get married from Malaysia

(1) Japanese people obtain a “Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage” at the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia

The following documents are required to obtain the certificate. If you have a marriage history, you need to obtain a death certificate if your spouse has divorced, and a divorce certificate if your spouse has divorced from the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia.

  • Japanese passport
  • Japanese family register (excerpt) (issued within 3 months)
  • Malaysian IC (identification card)

(2) A Japanese person goes to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia and is certified by a Japanese person’s certificate of fulfillment of marriage requirements.

Bring your passport for Japanese and IC (identification card) for Malaysian.

(3) Submit a marriage registration to JPN (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, National Registration Bureau) of your registered domicile.

Malaysians need the approval of the Malaysian government if they are 16 or 17 years old, and their father’s approval if they are 18 to 20 years old.

  • Marriage registration
    * Available at JPN in Kuala Lumpur. In the case of mail, it will take 2 to 3 weeks for the documents to arrive.
  • Certificate of fulfillment of marriage requirements
  • A copy of the family register of Japanese people
  • A copy of the passport of Japanese people
  • IC (identification card) of Malaysians

(4) If there is no objection after the marriage registration is posted at the government office for 21 days, the ceremony will be held at the JPN of the registered domicile.

(5) Make a report notification (marriage notification) to the Japanese embassy in Malaysia or the Japanese municipal office.

  • Marriage registration: 2 copies
  • Japanese spouse’s family register (issued within 6 months): 2 copies
  • Marriage certificate (Islamic marriage certificate if Malaysian is Muslim)
  • Islamic acceptance card for Japanese spouse (if Malaysian is Muslim)
  • Birth certificate for
  • Malaysian spouse
  • IC (identification card) for Malaysian spouse
  • * Except for marriage registration and family register Present the original and submit two copies each.
  • * For documents that are not written in Japanese, it is necessary to add several Japanese translations.

Up to 4 Muslim men can have a wife. However, special procedures are required for the second and subsequent wives.
