The procedure for marrying an Indian national can be done in either of the following ways, but for Indian nationals who do not have an address in Japan, the procedure is usually done from the Indian side first.

How to apply for marriage from Japan

(1)The Indian should prepare the following documents
  • Affidavit of the Indian national stating that he or she is single (with Japanese translation)
  • AFFIDAVIT VERIFICATION (with Japanese translation)
  • AFFIDAVIT VERIFICATION (with Japanese translation) is a document certified by a relative of the Indian national to the effect that he or she is single and authenticated by an Indian Judicial Magistrate.
  • Unmarried Certificate issued by the Minister of the State to which the applicant belongs (with Japanese translation).
  • A certificate of celibacy issued by the Indian Embassy in Tokyo based on the affidavit and declaration (with Japanese translation).
  • Indian passport (with Japanese translation)
  • Residence card of the Indian national.
  • If the applicant has a history of divorce or bereavement, a divorce certificate or death certificate certified by the Ministry of External Affairs of India is required.
(2)If the applicant has a history of divorce or bereavement, a divorce certificate or death certificate certified by the Ministry of External Affairs of India is required.

It may take a few months for the Ministry of Justice to make a decision on acceptance or non-acceptance.

(3) Obtain a Certificate of Acceptance of Marriage Registration and a copy of your family register, and have it certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan.
(4) Get the documents mentioned in (3) with English translation attached certified by the Indian Embassy in Japan.
(5) Report the marriage to the Indian Embassy in Tokyo with the certified copy of the marriage certificate and the family register.

Two parties to the marriage and three witnesses are required to appear in person with their identification documents.

(6) An Indian marriage certificate is issued.

How to perform marriage formalities from Indian side

(1)Either of the following marriage procedure laws, depending on the religion or non-religion of the Indian person

Hindu Marriage Act (if the Indian is a Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist)
Christian Marriage Act (3 weeks to 1 month notice is required)
Special marriage laws (priority is given to those of different religions as well as to those of the same religion).

Japanese nationals are required to join the same religion as the Indian nationals before marriage.

(2) Go to the Marriage Registration Office in the place of residence of the Indian national and apply to the Registrar for registration of the marriage.

The parties to the marriage and three witnesses will make an affidavit before the Registrar stating that they are single, of age and free from marital disabilities.

(Required documents)

  • Japanese national’s certificate of legal capacity to marry (translated and certified by Apostille)
  • A copy of the Japanese family register (translated and certified by Apostille)
  • If there is a history of divorce or bereavement, a copy of the family register showing the date of divorce or death will be required.
  • Japanese passport
  • Photo ID for Japanese nationals
  • ID card of the Indian national.
(4)The marriage certificate will be issued after the parties get married and the marriage is notified at the Marriage Registration Office for about 30 days.
(5)The marriage certificate will be issued.

(Documents required)

  • A copy of the family register showing the marriage.
  • Marriage certificate (with Japanese translation. (The original must be presented and a copy submitted)
  • A marriage certificate issued by a court of law or other public authority within 3 months of the date of marriage is required, not a religious marriage certificate.
  • Indian passport (with Japanese translation)
  • Passport of the Japanese national.
