If you wish to marry an Indonesian national, it is possible to complete the marriage formalities in both countries by completing the procedures in Japan. In this case, you do not need to travel back and forth between Indonesia and Japan, and you can complete the procedures in Japan by yourself.

In this section, we will explain how you can get married to an Indonesian national only in Japan.

It is also possible to get married in Indonesia first and then complete the formalities in Japan after you return to your home country. However, the procedure for marriage in Indonesia differs depending on whether the Japanese spouse is Muslim or not, and the place where the formalities are carried out. The procedure is more complicated than if you were to do it in Japan first.

If possible, please follow the steps below to complete the procedure in Japan. (If you are currently living in Indonesia and need to complete the formalities in Indonesia first, please contact us in advance).

Flow of procedure for marriage in Japan

1. Obtain a “Marriage Certificate” from your home country or the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in Japan.

In order to obtain this document, you will need a certificate from your local government certifying that you are currently single and a notarised birth certificate.
As a rule, only Indonesian nationals can obtain these documents from the Embassy or Consulate.

2. Marriage registration at the municipal office

Required documents

Affidavit of marriage requirements and its Japanese translation, copy of Japanese family register (not required if submitted to the same municipal office as the registered domicile), Japanese seal, Indonesian birth certificate.

(Please note that the required documents may differ from town hall to town hall, so please make sure to check with the town hall beforehand.

3. Obtain the documents from the office where you registered your marriage.

(It takes about 10 days for the marriage to be recorded in the family register).

4.It takes about 10 days after the procedure until the marriage is registered in the family register

After the procedure, you will be able to obtain a “Marriage Certificate”, which shows that the marriage procedure in Indonesia has been completed.
In order to obtain a marriage certificate, you will need a copy of the passport of each of the couple and a photograph of the couple together.

If you wish to live together as a couple in Japan after completing the above procedures, you will need to apply for a visa at the Immigration Bureau.

To do this, you will need the copy of your family register and the certificate of marriage obtained in steps 3 and 4, as well as a Japanese translation.
