The procedure for marrying a Singaporean can be carried out in one of the following ways
If the marriage formalities are carried out from Japan
(1)Both parties go to the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo to obtain an affidavit.
As Singapore does not issue a “Marriage Certificate”, the affidavit and the birth certificate can be used instead.
Required documents
- Marriage Search Result
- A Marriage Search Result must be obtained from the Registrar of Marriages or the Registrar of Muslim Marriages.
- Passports of both parties to the marriage.
(2)A copy of the marriage certificate of both parties to the marriage.
The marriage will be validated when the following documents are submitted (reporting to the Singapore Embassy is optional)
- Affidavit of marriage
- The Singaporean’s passport
- The Singaporean’s residence card
- Birth certificate of the Singaporean.
- A copy of the family register is also required if the marriage is to take place outside the Japanese national’s domicile.
For Muslims who wish to register their marriage in Singapore
(1)The Japanese person must obtain a “Certificate of Eligibility for Marriage” from the Legal Affairs Bureau in Japan or the Singapore Embassy.
If the certificate is obtained from the Legal Affairs Bureau, it must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Singapore Embassy.
(2)Register the marriage at the Islamic Marriage Registry in Singapore and hold the wedding ceremony within 150 days from 7 days after the registration.
The registration must meet the requirements of Islamic law and the Muslim Enforcement Act, and after registration, the two parties to the marriage and the wife’s Wali (father or male relative) must confirm the registration. To register a marriage, the following documents are required
- Passports of the parties and two witnesses (over 21 years old)
- Certificate of legal capacity to marry (with translation)
- A copy of the family register (with translation)
(3)Marriage registration certificate certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore.
(4) Report the marriage in Japan to the Japanese Embassy in Singapore or the local government office in Japan.
Submit the following documents along with your application (if your Japanese domicile and your domicile after marriage are different, you will need two copies each).
- A copy of the family register (shouhon)
- Marriage registration certificate (original) (with Japanese translation)
- A document certifying the nationality of the foreigner at the time of marriage (with Japanese translation)
- A copy of the ID cards of the two parties to the marriage.
In the case of non-Muslims, the marriage is to be conducted from Singapore.
(1)After one of the parties has been in Singapore for at least 15 days, both parties submit a notice of marriage to the Singapore Marriage Registry.
(2) A marriage licence is issued by the Registrar of Marriages.
(3)After 21 days from the date of filing of the notice of marriage, the marriage ceremony should be held within 3 months and the Registrar should register the marriage after the ceremony.
(4) Obtain a marriage certificate from the Singapore Government.
